Promoting standards of excellence through advanced training and development of our staff

We not only provide a wide range of in-house training to our own staff but offer additional places to local GPs and nursing students.

We fund research and consumables fees for our Fellows studying to become consultants. This is an alternative route to solely progressing through the NHS and gives doctors different types of experiences.

In 2018 we funded 28 higher level degrees courses for clinical and non- clinical colleagues in 2018, which helps our teams provide advanced level, quality care for patients.

We work with the NHS and local universities to provide work placements for students studying radiography, physiotherapy and nursing.

"The course has really opened my eyes to leadership and what it really means to be a great leader. I am really thankful to The London Clinic for investing in me and putting me on this course."

INVESTING IN EDUCATION

I’m very thankful for the support I get from The London Clinic

Investing in education and training to develop staff is a key component of The London Clinic’s charitable purpose. An example is the funding of the clinical research studies of The London Clinic’s Clinical Fellows as they progress towards becoming consultants.

Dr Jia Liu Stevens, an Intensive Care Clinical Fellow, combines working at The London Clinic’s intensive care unit with her PhD research, looking at the relationship between metabolic responses (how the body recovers after surgery) and patient outcomes following major surgery. She is under the supervision of Dr Daniel Martin and the mentorship of Dr John Goldstone, both consultants at The London Clinic.

Her PhD research is mainly laboratory-based and she hopes will help us to understand how the body recovers following surgery, and the role played by mitochondria and other factors.

Mitochondria are the key energy generators within the cells found in our body. They utilise the food consumed, in the form of sugars, fats and proteins and convert these into usable energy, which can be used to withstand the stress of surgery.

“Most of the Clinical Fellows in intensive care are NHS-trained registrars, who have taken 2-3 years out of training to pursue their research interests,” says Jia. “I started my programme in May 2017, originally doing a MD (Res) project, which I later upgraded to a full PhD because I was fascinated by my research question and the programme allowed me to delve deeper into the cellular aspects and mechanisms of my work."

“The London Clinic has been a sponsor for my PhD in the past two years and has funded my PhD fees during this time, supporting my academic development, offering flexibility in my work schedule, so that I can work on my research project. This has allowed me to plan the competing demands of my working life more effectively."

“Life is busy, especially juggling a PhD programme, working part-time and raising a young family, I’m very thankful for the support I get from The London Clinic.”
